The new obesity pill Xenical may be the first drug to help people with diabetes and obesity. The drug, known as Orlistat, will be available without a prescription in the UK from mid-October.
The drug is currently under its patent and the US Food and Drug Administration is still looking for cheaper alternatives to Xenical. But a new study by researchers at the University of Sheffield in the UK found that patients who took the drug had more weight loss on average than those who didn't take it. The results were presented today in the journal PLOS ONE. The findings from this study, which included more than 6,000 patients, were published online in the journal PLOS ONE.
"These findings could have important implications for patients with type 2 diabetes and obesity who are not taking the pill," lead study author Dr Naseem Atra, M. D., from the University of Washington, and a co-director of the weight loss and treatment program at Harvard Medical School, said in a release.
The drug is a lipase inhibitor. It works by preventing the digestion of fats in the bloodstream by binding to enzymes called lipases. When there is too much of the fat in the bloodstream, the lipases break down the fat and absorb it back into the body. That causes the body to absorb less of the fat, and thus the patient has fewer calories. About 20 per cent of the fat in the bloodstream is not digested, meaning the body needs more fat to absorb its nutrients. The drugs help patients lose weight, and are available without a prescription.
Orlistat is the first drug to be approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, and it's a welcome development for patients who are overweight or obese. It has been shown in clinical trials that people who took the drug lost an average of 5.5 pounds over the course of the first three months of the trial, compared with patients who did not take the drug. However, a meta-analysis of more than 10,000 participants found that only around 4 per cent of the patients who took Orlistat lost more weight than those who didn't take the drug.
The study is the first to demonstrate that patients who took Xenical lost an average of 5.5 pounds over the course of the trial. It also found that Xenical is not superior to a placebo for weight loss. Xenical has also been shown to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Orlistat is currently the only drug available without a prescription in the UK, and it is expected to be the first to be approved by the US FDA by mid-October. The drug was developed by Pfizer, which is developing the drug with the help of pharmaceutical companies. The drug, called Xenical, will be available without a prescription from mid-October until 2031.
The results from the study were published online in the journal PLOS ONE in September last year.
